2018 Finished Quilts, Quilts

Introducing Refraction {LP&Q Issue 59}

It is rather hard for me to believe this, but I created the design for this quilt in February of 2016 as part of Quilt Design a Day (QDAD)! Many of the quilts I designed in QDAD got put on my “must make” list, and I am excited to finally get to share Refraction with you today. Refraction can be found in Issue 59 of Love, Patchwork & Quilting, which released in the UK yesterday (Thursday, March 22nd) and will be available in the US in another 4-6 weeks.

Refraction was designed with the idea of light hitting the edge of a surface and reflecting back at different angles. Refraction is a phenomenon of light as it deflects and passes through objects of different density, and I like to imagine this mini quilt representing the spreading of not just light but ideas as they ripple, shift, and change at such a high rate in our online, digital world.

I used a combination of 2 different 50wt Aurifil variegated threads for the quilting: 4661 (Mint Julep) and 4662 (Creme de Menthe). I quilted the mini quilt on my domestic sewing machine, a Juki TL-2200 QVP mini using a walking foot.

The quilt was made using Michael Miller Cotton Couture solids in Spring, Mist, Seafoam, Sprout, and Lilypad.

Refraction finishes at 36 inches square, and I was excited to see it featured on the cover of the magazine in the lower right hand corner!
