Client Quilting {Spiced Chai Quilt}

I have a local friend who is quilting more frequently. I had talked with her about free motion quilting on her Bernina, but after frustration with her efforts, we have struck on the happy deal that I will quilt some of her finishes for her. Most recently, I had the fun of quilting her version of the Spiced Chai quilt from the book Vintage Quilt Revival by Katie Blakesley, Lee Heinrich, and Faith Jones.

When she dropped off her quilt, we discussed the different thread colors and quilting motifs I would use.

In the background, I used 50wt Aurifil 2600 (Dove) and quilted horizontal lines. In the brightly colored areas, I used 50wt Aurifil 4650 (Leaves) which is a variegated thread and quilted a swirl flower motif. In the black leaves, I used 50wt 2692 Aurifil (Black) in vertical lines. The 3 lighter leaf shapes also received vertical line quilting in 2600.

Because most of the quilting was done in a light color and the backing is black, the quilting really shows up and is fun to look at on the back.

There is one background area of the quilt that makes a perfect square, so I used a bit of dot to dot quilting to quilt a spiraling shape. This quilt is intended for my client’s son, and I hope they are both happy with it!

In general, I don’t quilt for others, but it is fun to occasionally get to quilt something for my mom or my friends.

  4. As someone who is looking to increase my FMQ skills (though I realize you did this amazing quilting on your longarm machine), I find myself focusing more on the actual quilting of quilts. I love your choices, especially that dot-to-dot square. Take care, Mary.

    It’s a lovely quilt, and your quilting is amazing. To me, light thread on a dark background would have my head in my hands, to you it is merely a challenge!

    This looks fabulous! Question…is it FMQ, wlaking foot, or did you use a longarm? I am breaking into more interesting quilting designs and enjoy FMQ, though I have a long way to go!
