I know today is the day after Thanksgiving, but I’m also pretty sure that some of you following along in the Wayward Transparency Quilt Along might be more than ready for the next set of instructions anyway! Regardless, due to the holiday and timing, the final set of instructions will be released in 3 weeks: plenty of time to jump in, catch up, or find the time to finish piecing your quilt tops using the information shared here. Be sure to check out the Quilting Jetgirl Facebook Group for all the beautiful versions being made and shared; it is inspiring!
Instructions
The instructions are published in this post and are available in an easy to print PDF format, link below. The instructions will always remain in the blog posts, but the full PDF pattern is now on sale for $10 in my Quilting Jetgirl Craftsy and Etsy stores, and it is even available as a printed booklet!
Wayward Transparency Quilt Top Assembly
Traditional Layout
Step 1
Arrange the (4) Wayward Transparency blocks on a design wall in an orientation that you find pleasing. Some sample arrangements are shown below.
Step 2
Sew the blocks together into rows. Press seams open.
Step 3
Sew the rows together. Press seams open. Quilt top should measure 48 ½” square.
On Point Layout
Step 1
Arrange the (4) Wayward Transparency blocks on a design wall as shown in the On Point Quilt Assembly Diagram.
Step 2
Sew the blocks together into rows. Press seams open.
Step 3
Sew the rows together. Press seams open. Quilt top should measure 48 ½” square.
Step 4
Mark a diagonal line from corner to corner and cut along the marked line on the (2) Fabric A 35″ squares to create (4) 35″ corner setting triangles.
To mark the diagonal line, I suggest folding the 35” square in half and pressing the fold. Keep the first fold, and fold in half again, pressing the fold. Make sure to take your time to get the raw edges aligned. I like to rotate so that the second pressed fold is on the right and the edge with two pressed folds is at the top. Pulling the top corner from the upper left toward the lower right corner, press the 45-degree fold. Keep folded and flip over and bring the remaining corner down to meet the first so that it looks like you have a single triangle. Take your time on all the folds to get all edges to align as well as you can. Open the square and cut (using a straight edge and rotary cutter or fabric scissors) along one of the diagonal pressed lines. The benefit of this method is that you can use the 45-degree fold that you did not cut to pin the triangle to the center of the quilt top in Steps 5 and 6! Repeat with the second 35″ square to create (4) 35″ corner setting triangles
NOTE: The triangles are cut on the bias, so I suggest waiting to cut them so that you handle them as little as possible prior to sewing them on the quilt top.
Step 5
Sew (2) 35″ corner setting triangles on opposite sides of the quilt top. Press seams open.
Tip: Pin the corner setting triangle to the pieced blocks starting in the center and working to each edge of the seam. The corner setting triangles should extend beyond the edge of the pieced blocks.
Step 6
Sew (2) 35″ corner setting triangles on the final two sides of the quilt top. Press seams open. Quilt top should measure 68″ square.
I think picking a layout is going to be the hardest part of this quilt!! 😀
Hi, I’m wondering if there is a reason why we the other traditional layouts are not advised to set on point?
I think what you are asking is if you can change the arrangement of the blocks and put it on point? Yes, you absolutely can!
Kind regards,
Yvonne
I apologize for this stupid question. I’m reading the instructions for cutting the setting triangles and wonder why you cut two 35” squares. Can’t I get the four triangles out of just one square? Thanks!
This is not a stupid question at all! You will only be cutting on ONE of the folded diagonal lines creating 2 triangles from a square. If you cut on both diagonal lines, the triangles will be too small.
Kind regards,
Yvonne
Well of course you need two 35” squares! Each is cut on the diagonal for four corners. I tried to delete my question but couldn’t. Sorry
Your folding, pressing, cutting directions are great!! I would never have imagined to cut the large triangles that way!!
And your whole pattern is awesome!!!
Thank you!
I’ll post a picture when I can find the right display for it!!!
I’m so glad I finished my blocks on the weekend. I was undecided on a layout, but I think I’m going to do on point because I think I already cut the 35 inch squares ha ha ha ha
I’ve made a little progress on my Wayward Transparency over the Thanksgiving holiday! Hopefully I will be caught up soon!
I can’t wait to see all the different layouts everyone chooses! So many great possibilities 🙂
I am trying to get caught up. I am loving looking at everyone’s color choices and layouts!
