I was asked to participate in a little tour of makers to showcase some of the quilt blocks featured in Art Gallery Fabrics tutorial series by Sharon from Color Girl Quilts. AGF has a YouTube channel where you will find video playlists that showcase their different fabric collections, industry show recaps, quilting and sewing tutorials, and the focus of this particular blog tour, the AGF Quilt Block Collection.
Jackknife Table Runner
After looking through the videos in the AGF Quilt Block Collection, I chose to make the Jackknife block. I was drawn to the block because I knew that the center of the block would be a great spot to place a feature fabric.
Fabrics from Nightfall by Maureen Cracknell for Art Gallery Fabrics
I chose to work with a beautiful selection of Maureen Cracknell’s Nightfall line for Art Gallery Fabrics. In particular, I knew I’d be meticulously placing the Moon Stories in Ash in the center of the Jackknife block. To compliment and finish the block I chose Labyrinthine in Dusk, Nox Iridescence in Dim, and Luminaries in Silver. For the backing, I selected Bird of Night in Slate.

Although I knew I was going to be making a table runner, I wanted to show how the Jackknife block repeat looks when the blocks are tiled together, so I snapped a quick photo of the four blocks I pieced on my design wall in a mini quilt / two by two tiled layout.

I quilted all around the central blocks in the Jackknife blocks using 50wt Aurifil #4662 (Creme de Menthe). Then I went in and carefully free motion quilted around the darling rabbits and moon in the center block using 50wt Aurifil #2784 (Dark Navy).

The table runner looked almost like it was meant to decorate the back of the rocking chair in my living room, but I think it has found a better forever home with my parents. When my mom saw the rabbits, she said the fabric “made her heart sing”, and I hope she gets a lot of joy using the table runner.

Yvonne, your table runner is stunning. The jackknife block is perfect for featuring fussy cutting – and those rabbits are adorable! The colors and prints you chose are modern and bold, without being distracting. I love the pic of the runner on the table with the place mats and I think I actually swooned when I saw the pic of the runner on your rocker. Perfection.
This is such a great use of that fabric. I have a piece in my stash – maybe I should make someone an Easter gift.

The rabbits make a very fun focus fabric, but the owls you used on the back stole my heart.
Beautiful! The fussy cutting in the center of the block really sets off the whole thing and your quilting is perfect. I love the way the straight lines add interest and texture without competing with the piecing. And how could you not give it to your mom after that comment?!
