In 2018, QuiltCon will be held February 22-25 in Pasadena, CA. Quilts can be submitted for consideration to the show through the end of the month (November 30, 2017) online using the QuiltCon Quilt Entry Form. The general rules for submission have updated just a little bit for this year, so if you are considering entering a quilt or quilts, it is worth going to the QuiltCon Quilt Entry Form and looking it all over. In particular this year, quilts may be submitted if they have not previously been shown at any QuiltCon. I had been considering entering Oh Happy Day and Downstream for judging this year as they were both in special exhibits at QuiltCon 2017, but this new rule means that they are not eligible for the show.
I have clearly been thinking about what quilts I want to submit this year, and I have a list of 7 quilts that I have made in the past year that I am really proud of that I am going to enter. Entrants are welcome to enter as many quilts as we like (at $15 per entry), but there is a limit of 5 accepted quilts per person. I guess I figured this year I might as well submit and see what happens. If nothing else, I get to share the roundup of them with you here today. I would love to see what quilts you are submitting, too, so maybe we can start a QuiltCon Submissions blogging trend for November?!?
Without further preamble, I would like to present the quilts I plan to submit for consideration / jurying for QuiltCon 2018 (in alphabetical order):
I plan to submit Digital Wave to the Modern Traditionalism category.
I plan to submit Mod Star Tree to the Modern Traditionalism category.
I plan to submit Spiraling Petals to the Piecing category.
I plan to submit Spring Growth to the Minimalist Design category. I appreciated the feedback I received on this quilt from the judging at my local fair, and I do plan to go back and add quilting to the un-quilted gray areas in the piecing before I submit the quilt, though.
I plan to submit Wayward Transparency to the Minimalist Design category.
I plan to submit Transparent Ribbons in the Use of Negative Space category.
And last, but not least, I plan to submit Transparent Ribbons in Modern Marks in the Use of Negative Space category. I’m actually really fascinated by the idea of submitting Transparent Ribbons in solids and in prints and seeing what happens…
What do you think? I always take my best stab at the correct category to enter each quilt into, but I’m open to being wrong about the category and also thankful to know that it is possible the category will be modified for me after submission (although I don’t want to be lazy and expect that to happen).
I was ill and unable to attend QuiltCon last year in Pasadena so I don’t have show experience to base my opinion on – but – I would enjoy seeing your quilts in person and I think your designs would fit well in a modern show.
It looks like you are really going to provide a lot of competition in those categories. I wish you the best on all of them.
Yvonne! I like that you’re branching out to prints for your transparency quilts. It’s a challenge and a different aesthetic, but still very modern. Bravo!

Thank you for sharing! I’m excited that you have so many! I have an idea for the Michael Miller challenge, but haven’t started yet. I’ve never had a quilt at a show, so it feels like a big step! Maybe next year will be the year for me to jump in with both feet like you!
Would love to see them at the show ! I planned to enter some of my quilts as well and still have to finish one … I’d better hurry up !
These are all wonderful. I’m thinking of entering 2 quilts myself. Will you be volunteering again at this event? I will miss attending but plan to go to Nashville.

Those are all amazing I’m sure you’ll “max out .” I love your idea of blogging about what quilts you entered. Believe it or not I entered 10 only to withdraw 5 after thinking it over. The MQG was great about it. While I like the fairness of the new rules they threw a wrench in my submission strategy for sure. Look for my QuiltCon entry post this weekend, again what a great idea!
I think you’ll do well in all the categories. I especially love the blue transparent ribboins with prints. The whole thing glimmers in the distant shots. Beautiful. Best wishes on your entries.
Good luck for sure! I’m curious about the pair of Transparent Ribbons also! And about Spring Growth – I think the lack of quilting in the gray adds some interest, but that’s just me. I’m still mulling what to submit – PLUS seeing if I can’t have just one more finish. We’ll see!

Yvonne, I was on the Judging and Jurying taskforce that redid the rules for QuiltCon. I believe our intention was that previously judged quilts could not be submitted for judging at subsequent QuitCons. If your two special exhibit quilts were not part of the regular exhibit then you might be able to submit them after all. Certainly worth checking with the higher ups! And good luck to all of your other quilts.
I’m sure to see many of these on display at QuiltCon, Yvonne! I’m carefully deciding on my submissions…
If it was up to me, they would all be in. But I’d be a terrible judge… all the yellow, bright and happy quilts would get in, and low volumes would be kicked to the curb. 😀 No QuiltCon submissions from me this year… I’ve only finished baby quilts and charity quilts all year. Maybe 2018 will change that!

They’re all beautiful quilts, Yvonne. I agree that it’s an interesting idea to submit the same design in both prints and solids. I’m pondering whether or not to submit this year and I think I’ve picked out two (just need to join the MQG first, lol). I’ll be sure to blog about them if/when I do submit them.

I think that pink / purple ribbon quilt will haunt me until I make one just like it … good thing I found the pattern in the Quitler’s Planner! 🙂
