Introducing Transparent Ribbons {2018 Quilter’s Planner}

For a little over a year, I kept myself from working on transparency designs. I thought a lot about whether or not I would want to write a book and so instead of creating all the ideas and designs in my head, I filed them away and decided to think for a while. After a lot of thought, I decided that writing a book about transparency design was not in my best interest, and I think by now you might be catching on that I am having a lot of fun working through this backlog of ideas.

Today, I am really excited to share a new transparency design that is included in the 2018 Quilter’s Planner, Transparent Ribbons.

I am keenly drawn to thinking about transparency when you consider it as a motive: removing the sense of needing to live behind a veil of secrecy and living fully and authentically is a large personal goal. Transparent Ribbons is another design doodle that I started with the goal of creating overlapping shapes for color value / transparency fabric selection play. The angled design and way that the blocks can relate to one another create a rippling chain, like a swirling candy ribbon or, more metaphorically, like how choices in life can ripple and cascade.

Once again, Kitty Wilkin from Night Quilter‘s beautiful outdoor photography are going to be a feature in the 2018 Quilter’s Planner. I especially adore this detail photograph that she took of Transparent Ribbons because the transparent flowers and grass in the foreground transitioning to out of focus transitioning to in focus really make my heart happy and are a visual representation of a lot of my thoughts and ideas behind why transparency in quilt design speaks to me. Finding focus; finding the places of overlap and collaboration.

  13. Gosh, this is such an eye-popping design! I actually thought my vision was out-of-focus when I looked at it. Love, love, love what you’ve created. I too am totally intrigued by transparency, but am pretty much clueless about figuring out how to do it. I’m trying to design a quilt for an upcoming MQG chapter challenge, and want to play with transparency… but don’t know where to begin. You’ve obviously got this figured out! I simply adore this quilt.

  20. quinnyquilts says:

I really like this quilt Yvonne. Often transperancy quilts don’t quite work for me, but I think it’s the addition of the fourth colour that really makes this. I’m looking forward to giving this a go, as it’s a concept I’ve wanted to try, but haven’t found the pattern/teacher that makes it work in my head, but I think this might be it 🙂
    E xx

  21. This quilt stopped me in my tracks when I first saw it on Instagram. I think it’s the colors that are so appealing to me. I’m a sucker for a white background, and the idea of a transparency design in such rich colors kicks me out of my color comfort zone. It’s beautiful — and the quilting truly complements the sense of layers created by the design. : )

  22. Kate says:

Love the colors in this quilt. Transparency is such a fun idea and you developed beautifully in this quilt. Congrats on being in this year’s planner.

  23. Another gorgeous transparency quilt! The ribbons really vibrate. You really have gone one step further in this transparency concept with these colors. It is a knockout.

  24. I love this! I’m so glad I’ve already preordered my planner! 🙂

  25. This is so pretty. I love how you quilted the overlapping areas. Another great design (in my favorite colors.)

  26. Helen says:

What a beautiful quilt ! This has such a shimmer to it and the setting for the photographs is beautiful . You’re right . I wish people had more transparency in their lives . Especially corporations and government

  27. Helen says:

I thought of DNA too !

  28. I love seeing how explore the concept of transparency. The darker purple background is just awesome!

  29. Lisa says:

The design in wonderful Yvonne and I think fabric choices are the key which is the tricky part. Clinton Modern Fabrics is hoping to pick up the planner for Canadians . I’m crossing my fingers.

  30. This is one of my favorites of yours, Yvonne! Partially because of the palette, but also because it is SO YOU! Transparency is your thing, and the quilting complements your design beautifully.

  31. sue7oaks says:

Great colours and photos for this quilt Yvonne! The Quilters Planner always looks so tempting!

  32. beautiful quilt!! You don’t sleep!!! I think this planner will be my birthday’s gift in november!!!

  33. I love the optical illusion in this. The mid-pink has a shimmery/blurry quality it to it. I cannot describe it, but I love it.

  34. This is a great pattern. Congrats on having it included in the planner.

  35. Carie says:

Oh that is stunning – and as I already have my quilter’s planner pre-ordered I shall look forward to it for next year!
