Sandra @mmmquilts! published the final set of piecing instructions for the Freefall QAL last Monday, May 1st. Before piecing the final blocks, I decided I needed to consider the placement of color in the final quilt as the last blocks are very specifically made. Note that the layouts I am presenting below are for color order ONLY. As per Sandra’s advice, I will aim to have 2 leaf points at most in a corner, so I will spend my time finalizing the individual block orientations later.
My initial fabric layout was based on trying to keep things in ROYGBIV color order, but the balance felt a little off. After relaxing that thought and spending time moving the blocks around on my design wall for the better part of last week, I finally settled on having the cooler tones in the upper left and the warmer tones in the lower right (more or less).

After selecting what went where, piecing the final 6 blocks went fairly easily. Attention to detail and making sure the shadow leaf and background fabrics where in the correct position took a bit of extra thought, but having sewn these blocks before really helped the process go smoothly.

I have to say I am really excited about how it is all coming together!

The part I am struggling with is leaf fabric for the split half and half, as my big leaf was the dark green fern, and the background a mauve/pale pink/ creamy swirl. I had chosen deep red, and the orange/tan but decided they were were too busy. with the fern design.You had a great idea to place the others round first, and the contrasts are super.
I like the final layout option. As I was reading I was hoping to see the layout with the split leaves included. I guess I need to be a little more patient…sigh
It’s looking great. I did exactly the same thing when working on mine yesterday-auditioning those big squares in the last blocks on the design wall to get the placement the way I wanted.

I really like the color palette you’ve chosen for the quilt; not your traditional “fall” colors. It would fit having this up year round. I can’t wait to see the final layout of the entire quilt.

This is a good example of how important attention to detail can be. The time you spent considering your colour placement paid off; I like your final arrangement a lot.

I love the dramatic Alison Glass fabrics against the night sky fabric, and i love how you thought of ranging them in hot to cold colours. Have you thought about your quilting yet?
