2017 Finished Quilts, Quilt Pattern, Quilts

Thorn Quilt and Pattern Release

Today is an exciting day for me for many reasons. You know I have mentioned that secret sewing is hard in the past. Well, Thorn is a “secret pattern” that I have had created for over a year that I finally get to publicly share with you today!

I created the Thorn quilt pattern as my 2016 Patreon pattern, and as such it was only available to those who signed up to support me via Patreon for $1 per month. Alternatively, those brave enough to pay $12 for a “secret” quilt pattern could also purchase it through my pattern shop.

Thorn is a quilt block based design, and the way the block interacts with itself makes for very fun secondary design options depending on the layout you choose. I offer many different layout options for baby, lap, full, and queen size quilts but the possibilities are only limited by your imagination!

I made a baby quilt version of Thorn, and I chose to quilt it with an all over swirl flower motif to play off the “every rose has a thorn” idea. I used 50wt Aurifil 2024 (White) for the quilting. The white background is Kona White, the colored piecing for the quilt are Peppered Cottons, and the binding is leftover wide Artisan Shimmer backing fabric.

The backing is more Kona White, which lets the quilting shine. I machine sewed on the binding using 50wt Aurifil 5003 (Wine) on the top and 2024 (White) in the bobbin.

The public release of the Thorn digital quilt pattern also marks the release of my 2017 Patreon secret pattern. To celebrate the public release of these quilt patterns, Thorn and the 2017 Patreon secret pattern will be on sale in my pattern shop for $8 through Saturday, February 18.

Very cool, Yvonne!! And what fun to see your “secret pattern” from last year… I’ve been eager to see this all together and it’s as cool as I imagined! I like the bottom middle arrangement, although it’s very Lent-y in my Catholic brain 🙂 I also really love the layout you chose. Congratulations on yet another fun pattern release! <3

  16. The versatility of this block blows me away, Yvonne. In the sample layouts you provide, I see tiled floor, a succulent, a design I’d expect to see in a house of worship, and so much more. This must have been hard to keep under wraps! Congratulations on the full reveal!
