I am making progress on my long to-do list! I was able to finish my secret sewing project over the weekend, and I wanted to start a quick project to fill in some time (while my husband slept in each morning), so I decided to pick out some fabric and think about one of the mini quilts on my list.
That quickly expanded out until I had a finished quilt top! Hooray!
Kaleidoscope Mini Quilt Top
I followed the free Permission to Play: Kaleidoscope Quilt pattern from Robert Kaufman fabrics. The quilt top finishes at 27 1/2″ square. I had a lot of fun playing with different layouts, and I love the ring of turquoise / aqua fabrics. I plan to back it with a gray fabric and bind in turquoise.
I don’t have any ideas on how I will quilt this, so do you have any suggestions for what you think this quilt needs? I can put this aside and ponder for a bit this while I do my first quilting for a local client who brought me a quilt top she made to gift to her mom at Christmas.
I love this mini quilt the turquoise/aqua really makes it pop I’d love to try this on a big quilt. I think it would look great with a wavy line quilting would love to see it finished
Beautiful mini quilt! I really like your color choice and the fabric – it always makes me smile when I discover a piece of the Mercury collection – there’s just something I really like about it.
I like the quilt. I am only a beginner, and don’t usually have a clue as to how to quilt something, but I an acutally see quilting the diamond shapes by outlining the diamond and going inwards until you reach a small diamond in the middle. I can see pebbles in the white areas. The small triangles between the diamond shapes could also be pebbles or mini spirals.
It looks beautiful, Yvonne, and I don’t have a clue how you should quilt it! But I know it will look amazing when it is finished, and I can’t wait to to see it! Have a great day, Mary.

Pretty colors! I like the idea of echoing the shapes. It might take a while but it will really shine.

Kaleidoscope quilts are one of my favorites and always catch my eye. Yours looks like a sparkling, faceted gem. Any chance you could give even more depth and sparkle to this beauty with your quilting?
Wow, I love it! Both the pattern and the color choices are fabulous. I’m not the most innovative quilter but my first instinct is to do some really angular straight line quilting (similar to what Jacquie Gering does). I’m sure whatever you do will be great!

Wow, the design and color caught my eye right away. Maybe you can just quilt in the the white area with quilting and leave the color ones alone. I love your fabric placement and choices. Since I am having my morning coffee and reading your post at the same time, it took me a while to figure out what you mean when you said you used Robert Kaufman’s free pattern. 🙂 Is it okay if I use your idea?

I love what you did with close colors/values around the edges, and I’d enhance that by quilting color chunks as one using Angela Walters’ dot-to-dot approach. The center, where the values differ, I’d quilt separately, also dot-to-dot. I’d use blue thread on blue and orange on orange to keep the sharp contrast with white. I’d wait till the colors were quilted to decide how to quilt the white (with white thread). My favorite thing: thinking about what to do when I don’t have to do it. 🙂
You should both be sleeping in with all the work you’re doing on the Fuschia Fox! But I’m glad you got up and sewed this for us–great colors.
It’s beautiful – I love the contrast between red/oranges and turquoise and how just two basic shapes create a variety of shapes when put together.
I love this so much! Turquoise and orange has become one of my favorite color combinations. All of those wonderful geometric shapes would look great with some ruler work inside them, both straight and curved lines. But I might be kind of bias, because I’m kinda on a ruler kick since I just got some for my long arm 🙂
I’m thinking this might look interesting with some kind of wide concentric circles starting in the middle and maybe getting wider as you work your way out. I’ve never tried it, but have thought about it.

What an attention-catching coloration! I do love a kaleidoscope. I’d go with something dense on the white in order to pop the colored sections, and something angular (like the gray and orange sections here: https://kathleengkerr.files.wordpress.com/2016/10/img_4936-1.jpg?w=470&h=627) on the colored shapes.
This is lovely Yvonne – no ideas on the quilting sadly! I have a colour sheet for a kaleidoscope pattern that has been sat on my desk for 6 weeks now …. this has made me want to get on with it!

What a great color combo for this quilt! It is great!
I love all the different kinds of patterns you can make with color placement and thus block. The turquoise binding is a great idea. I would try to emphasize the ring of turquoise with your quilting.
As it is small I would probably hand quilt it. I think I would do each triangle individually straight lines down from the point flaring out towards the bottom. I would be inclined to vary the number of quilting lines in each triangle. Perhaps even big stitch or even use Perle Cotton thread.
I adore the colours but I am the last person to ask for quilting advice. Pause for a while and the right idea will come to you.

This pattern makes for a beautiful mini and I like the colors you chose. I see lots of options for quilting it, most that come to mind are some variation of dot-to-dot quilting.
