Snowflake Shimmer Quilt Along {Piecing Instructions #1}

Welcome back to the Snowflake Shimmer Quilt Along! This week we are making square in a square blocks.

I timed myself as I went through the quilt making process, and the first piecing instructions took me 3.5 hours. I know we all work at different paces, but I thought that I would try to give you some kind of expectation of the work involved for each step of this process.

Square in a Square Blocks

Step 1

Cut one Fabric B 5ʺ x 5ʺ square and one Fabric C 5ʺ x 5ʺ square in half from corner to corner.

Step 2

Using a scant quarter inch, sew one Fabric B triangle to the side of one Fabric A 6 ⅛ʺ x 6 ⅛ʺ square and one Fabric C triangle to the opposite side of the Fabric A square. Press seams open.

Step 3

Using a scant quarter inch, sew one Fabric B triangle to the Fabric A square and a Fabric C triangle to the remaining side of the Fabric A square. Press seams open and trim to 8 ½ʺ square.

Step 4

Make a total of (8) Fabric A/B/C square in a square blocks.

Step 5

Make (4) Fabric A/B square in a square blocks.

Step 5 – Make (4)

Step 6

Make (21) Fabric A/C square in a square blocks.

Step 6 – Make (21)

Block Piecing

Step 1

Trim selvage edges from the (3) 8 ½ʺ x WOF strips that were set aside.

Step 2

Cut (1) 8 ½ʺ x WOF strip in half.

Step 3

Sew together the (1) 8 ½ʺ x WOF strip with one half of a 8 ½ʺ x WOF strip from Step 2. Press seam open. Trim to 8 ½ʺ x 56 ½ʺ.

Step 4

Repeat to make (2) 8 ½ʺ x 56 ½ʺ rectangles.

Tips and Tricks

1. Sewing the Square in a Square blocks with a scant quarter inch is really key to making these blocks.
2. To place the Fabric B and Fabric C triangles for the Square in a Square blocks, I recommend folding the Fabric A 6 ⅛ʺ x 6 ⅛ʺ squares in half in both directions and pressing them to create a crease or fold line. When placing the triangle, make sure the point of the triangle falls on the pressed line.
