Rainbow Rose QAL {Finished Quilt}

I am really pleased to share with you my finished Rainbow Rose QAL quilt today! I made the small / baby quilt size during the quilt along, which finishes at approximately 40-inches square. It was a joy to put together, and I loved getting to do the final photo shoot and see all the bright colors outside.

One of the many reasons I liked taking this quilt outside was to see the contrast in color against our very dry and golden landscape. The area of California I live in is known for green springs and dry, golden summers, but the landscape has become especially harsh over the last 5 years or so as a very bad drought has set in. So a bit of brilliant rainbow color definitely brightened up the landscape.

I decided to go with simple straight line quilting using 50wt Aurifil in 3817 (Marrakesh, which is a variegated rainbow thread). I decided the design was definitely the star of the show, and even though the thread has a high contrast against the white background, it is subtle and does not seem to distract from the brilliant block and rainbow piecing.

I used up every last inch of this striped rainbow fabric for the back of the quilt. In fact, it really wasn’t quite big enough, so I used a 3″ double folded binding strip and sewed it down with a 1/2″ seam allowance on the back to secure all the raw edges.

This was a really enjoyable Quilt Along experience, and I am very pleased with my final quilt. I am definitely thinking more rainbow color schemes will be in my future!

So, thank you, Ruth, for the fabulous experience. I will be linking up to the final Rainbow Rose QAL linky, Finish it Friday, and TGIFF.

Beautiful! Simple straight line quilting looks marvelous and really lets the piecing and fabrics shine. And I love the pictures with the mountains in the distance. You’ve inspired me. I think I will quilt mine this weekend 🙂

  2. Looks fabulous! Beautiful quilting.

  3. Beautiful finish! Your transition through the rainbow with your prints is great and the straight line quilting was an excellent choice.

  4. Audrey says:

Oh, this is lovely! I adore the quilting, and I think the binding is a super fun touch too. And your binding solution is so clever! I’ll have to tuck that trick away for future use. 🙂

  5. Lovely quilt! It’s been fun watching you build it.

    Yvonne,

What a beautiful quilt. I love it. I still need to do mine. I need to quit my full time job so I can have time to work on things.

  7. Lena says:

Congratulations on the finish! It turned out great! And it really has a great contrast with the background in your beautiful photos)). I only marked mine for quilting yesterday (I’m also doing variegated thread), but haven’t decided on the binding yet.

  8. Good Morning Yvonne! This quilt is marvelous with all of its beautiful bright fabrics and the straight line quilting! Another spectacular finish. Thank you so much for sharing this with us. Have a fantastic creative day!

Yvonne, your photos (and the quilt, of course) are stunning! The design of the quilt is so well showcased with the quilting you chose. It just shines!

  10. Oh it was fun. And I love the dottie fabric you used on yours. I actually would make another one, which I don’t say very often. I’m out of town this week but I’ll finish mine as soon as I get back.

  11. This turned out amazing. Love the colours and the quilting.

  12. What a creative way to use binding to deal with the short backing. I will have to somehow remember that one! Yvonne, this is a wonderfully cheerful finish. Lovely colors and it looks great photographed against the wall.

  13. Shauna says:

That is beautiful and you are right that is shines against the browns. I love the colors you chose they are simply perfect!!!!

  14. Pam Losely says:

Evonne, thanks so much for letting us watch your creative process for this beautiful quilt. Love your fabric pick!
    A beautiful finish!

  15. Best choice of fabric colour changes, and the quilting lines, that is the best icing on your cake. Love it all.

  16. Karen says:

Stunning quilt, Yvonne! I can see all the decision making involved in joining the pieces for each color together and then how to arrange the colors. Another wonderful finish!

  17. acbeier71 says:

Beautiful quilt, Yvonne. The fabrics are so pretty and look just right in that design.

  18. Lisa says:

    It’s beautiful Yvonne.

  19. Rochelle Summers says:

I do so love the bright colors of this quilt. The back is even brighter. Thank you so much for letting us enjoy your progress in the QAL.

  20. Emily says:

It’s lovely! And that backing is fantastic!

I’ve got to know–how do you get your quilt to stay on the outdoor wall like that?!?

  21. I made my star bigger to avoid negative space around the outside, but now I see how lovely yours looks, I want to add big borders before I start quilting. The borders make the centre pop. The only hitch is that I would have to go shopping if I did that – for border fabric and for more backing. 🙁

  22. I am in love with this finish. Your color progression is spot on. I never would have thought to quilt it with straight lines but you’re right — it makes the block design pop that much more. As someone else commented – how do you get the quilt to stay on the wall? Do you still just use tape?

  23. Sue says:

    Stunning-I absolutely LOVE it!

  24. aquilterstable says:

    beautifully done!

  25. Helen says:

Your star looks so vibrant . I’m only sorry I didn’t get to join in , though I do have an ombré version done . And your wall and setting are just perfect as a back drop , no neighbouring houses like I have

  26. Jenny Coyle says:

Absolutely gorgeous, even more so because of your wonderful photo set-up! I love the way you have just straight-line quilted, it really lets the colours be the star feature. Well done! (And if I could I would happily send you some of our rain…)

  27. This is a beautiful finish!

  28. Kaja says:

This is beautiful, and I love that you took it outside for the photos – your setting shows it off perfectly.

  29. Izzy says:

Really nice finish! I love those gorgeous colours against the background in the photos.

  30. Pat in WNY says:

Your quilt turned out beautifully, and I really like the simple straight line quilting for this one. The backing/binding fabrics complement it perfectly.

  31. kaholly says:

It’s magnificent! I like how you solved the ‘not quite big enough backing’ problem. Very clever!

  32. A beautiful quilt and fabulous photos to show it off!

  33. Lara B. says:

Your Rainbow Rose is so vibrant and beautiful Yvonne! The quilting sets it off just perfectly too!

  34. Ruth says:

So so pretty – saw the shout out on twitter with Aurifil too! Great photo shoot – jealous of that beautiful blue sky!

  35. dezertsuz says:

Love your version! Those polka dots are just plain fun. The straight line quilting looks great, and the rows looks so even and parallel.

  36. Sandra says:

Okay apparently I didn’t write anything here?! I know I saw this. Love that first shot in particular, such wonderful colours in your quilt and against that azure sky. I used Marrakesh as well on mine. 🙂

I really appreciate the time and thought you take to comment, and I look forward to conversing with you. :)
