Welcome to the 2016 Paintbrush Studio New Block Blog Hop! Paintbrush Studio generously sponsored this New Block Blog Hop featuring their new line of solids, Painter’s Palette. Paintbrush Studio is also generously sponsoring a half yard giveaway of the fabric bundle put together for the blog hop, so don’t miss out on two different ways to enter to win (details at the bottom of the post).
Oceanglow Quilt Block Tutorial
I used the full palette of 6 colors and direct inspiration from Josef Albers’ Interaction of Color to create a 12-inch finished block that I have named Oceanglow. Oceanglow is also a great block to practice sewing a consistent ¼ʺ seam allowance.
The 2016 Paintbrush Studio color palette is shown below. To re-create this block in a different color palette, you will need two color groupings. Fabric A and B should be one color tone with Fabric A being much darker in value than Fabric B. Fabrics C through F should be a second color tone with Fabric C being the lightest value and Fabric F being the darkest value.
Fabric Requirements / Cutting Instructions
Fabric A – Fat Eighth (9ʺ x 21ʺ)
- Cut (1) 2ʺ x 21ʺ strip
- Subcut (4) 2ʺ x 2ʺ squares
- Subcut (6) 1 ½ʺ x 2ʺ rectangles
- Cut (2) 1 ½ʺ x 21ʺ strips
- Subcut (2) 1 ½ʺ x 12 ½ʺ rectangles
Fabric B – Fat Eighth (9ʺ x 21ʺ)
- Cut (1) 2ʺ x 21ʺ strip
- Subcut (2) 2ʺ x 7 ½ʺ rectangles
- Cut (2) 1 ½ʺ x 21ʺ strips
- Subcut (3) 1 ½ʺ x 7 ½ʺ rectangles
Fabric C – Fat Eighth (9ʺ x 21ʺ)
- Cut (1) 2ʺ x 21ʺ strips
- Subcut (1) 2ʺ x 7 ½ʺ rectangle
Fabric D – Fat Eighth (9ʺ x 21ʺ)
- Cut (1) 2ʺ x 21ʺ strips
- Subcut (1) 2ʺ x 7 ½ʺ rectangle
Fabric E – Fat Eighth (9ʺ x 21ʺ)
- Cut (1) 2ʺ x 21ʺ strips
- Subcut (1) 2ʺ x 7 ½ʺ rectangle
Fabric F – Fat Eighth (9ʺ x 21ʺ)
- Cut (2) 2ʺ x 21ʺ strips
- Subcut (1) 2ʺ x 7 ½ʺ rectangle
- Subcut (8) 2ʺ x 2ʺ squares
Oceanglow Piecing Instructions
The Oceanglow block is pieced by first sewing together blocks into columns, and then sewing the columns together as noted in the assembly diagram above. After piecing, the block should measure 12 ½ʺ x 12 ½ʺ.
The key to block assembly is sewing with a consistent ¼ʺ seam allowance. There are (8) seams in Columns 3, 4, and 5, and even a small difference in seam allowance can lead to an imbalance in length. I suggest sewing each seam, pressing the seam open, and then measuring and trimming off any excess fabric before sewing the next seam. For instance, sewing the first two blocks of Column 2 together (Fabric A: 2ʺ x 2ʺ and Fabric F: 2ʺ x 2ʺ), the fabric on either side of the seam should measure 1 ¾ʺ after the seam is pressed open.
The Oceanglow Block Tutorial is also now available as a free download from my Craftsy store.
All of the quilt blocks featured this week are going to be assembled into quilts and donated to charity. I hope you check out all the creative new block tutorials that are going to be shared this week!
