2016 QuiltCon Magazine Winners

There were 638 entries in the 2016 QuiltCon Magazine Giveaway. The 2 international winners are Joan and Carmit, and the 2 US winners are Patricia and Christine. Congratulations! The winners have been emailed, and if I do not get a response by Friday at midnight EST, I will select a new winner.

Below are a few of the questions that were asked about color. I hope to be writing more about color use in upcoming posts and tutorials as well, so thank you for all the input!

Q: Do you pre-wash fabric?

A: Not usually. I do pay a lot of attention to the reds that I purchase and test them in water to see if I need to pre-wash. And when I buy a new fabric I like to test if there is uniform shrinkage. But overall, I tend to buy and use fabric.

Q: How worth it is it to make a quilt “outside of your comfort zone” in order to try something new. I’m tempted to dabble, but with the time and money it takes to make a quilt, I’m also nervous! If I love certain colors, is there any harm in making quilts with those colors!?

A: I have a personal goal of trying something new once a year in quilting. So, perhaps my goal for the year could be met by working with colors outside of my comfort zone. But there are no rules in quilting, and there is definitely no harm or shame in buying what you love and making what you love!

Q: How to always get it right! (regarding color selection)

A: Sometimes getting it wrong is great. Then you’ll know that you don’t want to do that color combination again!

Q: Have you ever mixed quilting cotton with a heavier fabric in a quilt? If so, how did it turn out?

A: I have. I used a medium weight decor fabric for a backing and binding on placemats, and it worked great. I know many others who have used denim and quilting cotton together to great (and beautiful) success.

Q: Did you purchase your fabric online or did you need to see it in a quilt store to know it all worked together?

A: For Sunburst, I made my order based on the color card. I am glad it worked out as well as it did!

Q: Is there a way to practice selecting colors without having to purchase a program?

A: Yes, absolutely! There are lots of ways, but I am going to recommend you check out Color Play Friday @Laurel Poppy and Pine and @In An Otter Life as a place to start.

Yay! Already replied to your email and really looking forward to it. I like your policy of trying something new every year. I think I’m going to adopt it, and my Bee Stash block for this month will be the way to do it – paper piecing.

  4. Good Morning Yvonne! Congratulations to the winners! I enjoyed reading the questions and answers in the post today. I for some reason do not remember the post of you asking a question (giggle, giggle, giggle) but it sure has made an interesting topic and a way to learn more about yourself and you about us. So, I will be looking forward to reading future posts and tutorials regarding color!

Yvonne, I also have to mention and applaud the spectacular photo posted. The brilliance of the two landscape variations meeting together as they do and then having the Sunburst quilt laying there … it is just a very unique and breathtaking photograph. Thank you so much for sharing everything that you do and have a fantastic creative day!
