Over the holiday break, I was able to get a lot of pattern writing done. One of the quilts I am most excited to make and release as a pattern this year is the Beacon quilt.
The first thing I did was sew together a test block to help me finalize the design and sizes. Then I came up with another size and needed to sew together a test block for it… Once the pattern was all pulled together I sat back and thought about the intent behind the design.
beacon (from http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/beacon)
noun bea·con ˈbē-kən
: a strong light that can be seen from far away and that is used to help guide ships, airplanes, etc.
: a radio signal that is broadcast to help guide ships, airplanes, etc.
: someone or something (such as a country) that guides or gives hope to others
Out of that I created a very purposeful color palette that has a lot of meaning for me in not only the colors, but the names of the colors. This week, my order arrived, and I enjoyed seeing that they play as well together in person as I had hoped.
Kona cotton in Nautical, Torch, and White. I ordered just under a full bolt of Nautical… and I love that it came on a roll. The finished quilt should look something like this:
I look forward to sharing more of this particular quilt’s journey with you soon!
Linking up with Sunday Stash.
Hi! Wow, full roll of Kona! Your quilt design is fantastic and I’m happy you told about your inspiration. x Teje
I’m not going to lie, in my Sunday morning sleepiness, I totally read this as ‘Bacon Quilt’. Lol. I had to rub the sleep out of my eyes a few times before it came into focus. Lovely new design, all that Kona will be a wonderful canvas for quilting!
Very strong graphic design – I’m looking forward to seeing more about it.
I love both color versions! The Nautical blue is such a gorgeous rich color, you can’t go wrong! This is a beautiful, graphic and stand out design!
These colors look great together, I’m looking forward to seeing it come together!
I love your design, so bold and graphical. It’s going to really show off your quilting.
So often your designs are distilled down, yet have so much impact. Your creativity is totally on fire, Yvonne!
Good Morning Yvonne! This is a bold design that will look majestic anywhere it is placed in a room! Usually, I am not one who goes for a design of this magnitude; but, I honestly can say this looks like it would not only be challenging but fun to piece. Thank you for sharing and have a wonderful creative day!
Very interesting design. Looking forward to seeing this completed as I can already visualize the many amazing ways to quilt it.
full roll of kona! And there’s me feeling adventurous buying 2 metres at a time! Love how this quilt turned out and look forward to the story.
Intriguing design. I love minimalism, and I really like the slight slant on the squares. Can’t wait to see the real thing!
rolls of fabric seem more exciting to me than bolts (but then I work in a fabric shop so am used to them!). I LOVE your new design, really striking and you picked the perfect colours!
What great colours. I love Torch. Looking forward to hearing more about Beacon.
I really like the pattern. Trying to decide if the light pieces have a curve to them or if it is an optical illusion. The name makes we wonder if this is related to the light house design you did for the placemats. Also wondering what it would like with the light and dark colors reversed.
Nautical, torch and white for a beacon? Freaky coincidence on colour choices or careful planning?
I love this strong, graphic design, the nautical is such a great color for it.
I imagine this will be an amazing backdrop to some incredible Jetgirl quilting?
