Cocoa Leaf Medallion Flimsy Finish

I am super thrilled to say that I buckled down and spent 7 hours this week finishing up the Cocoa Leaf Medallion quilt top and backing. Hooray! As it is intended for a queen size bed, I carefully placed the finished top on my own bed to get a feel for how it will drape. I did not get the top pulled up quite far enough (the foot of the quilt drapes down to the floor!), but with quilting and first wash it will also shrink a bit, too.

Wrestling the quilt top around and through my machine to applique down the leaf shapes wrinkled it up a bit, but it should all work itself out with a quick press before I load it on my long arm to be quilted. I’m not sure if I will be jumping right in to quilt this or if it will wait a month or two… no promises either way on this one right now!

And in case the size of the quilt wasn’t obvious based on the generous drape over the edge of a queen size mattress, here is a photo of the quilt top taking up almost all the floor space in my living room.

I also got the quilt backing put together on Wednesday. I wanted to make sure it was bigger than the quilt top (whew), but the size of my long arm also limits just how wide I could make the backing, too. It will be a little dance to make sure it all stays lined up and good when I get to quilting.

YAY! Congrats!! It looks fabulous 😀 So much negative space and large areas to quilt. . . makes me a little weak in the knees! haha Can’t wait to see this one all quilted up but I certainly understand taking a break from it before starting. Do you have a quilting plan? It is going to be all kinds of awesome 🙂

    Awesome finish.

I can sort of see why you weren’t itching to spend time on this one – huge size and not the most exciting sewing/preparation, all the fun stuff seems to have been more in the planning really. But it does look effective now you’ve done it, and I think it will come to life even more when you quilt it.

Huge!! I guess I didn’t realize that the cocoa leaf center was that large, but wow! What an amazing quilt! I cannot wait to see how you quilt this one! Great job Yvonne!

  7. Oooh… it looks so lovely in your blue room, Yvonne! Good for you for putting the pedal down and finishing the top. I think you’ve earned a little break… maybe a new project 🙂 This is exactly how I end up with a long list of WIPs. LOL!

  14. Lucy says:

Congrats on the finish and WOW! I had no idea it would be so large from your process posts. Love how it looks on a bed!

Somewhere I missed the size ( I see I am not alone) and thought you were doing a small wall hanging! What a surprise to see it on a queen sized bed. Very dramatic. Looks good with your blue walls too. A bed quilt definitely has to be seen on a bed to appreciate it.

  18. calipidgious says:

    It’s a beautiful quilt!

  19. Wow! This looks soooo good! I knew from your past posts that the center was big, but seeing it on the bed puts it all in perspective. I am so excited to see how you quilt it!

  24. Amazing. It looks perfect on YOUR bed- and I love the dotted border. I imagine your clients will be doing happy dances!

  25. JanineMarie says:

I think you need more than one Whoop Whoop for this one, Yvonne. I didn’t realize that the center covered the whole bed. It looks amazing! Congrats on finishing it this week. I will be very interested in your stats on the size/shrinkage since I’m working on a quilt of similar size. (But I understand if you wait awhile to finish it. And my quilt will take awhile anyway. I have no firm plan in place for when the central block is done.)

  26. wish2stitch says:

That is one amazing looking quilt. Can you tell me who designed the pattern. Looking forward to see how you will quilt this.

  27. Christine Sherman says:

  30. Kaja says:

That is a seriously large quilt. It looks great on your bed too (though I know it’s not for you). I love the run of colours around the edge.

  31. Yay it’s done! That is one big check on your to do list. Congrats. Love the simplicity of the leaves around the edge, nice touch.

  32. Shauna says:

love it, the colors pop so well!!!! I can’t wait to see how you quilt it, but I’m not rushing you or anything. 🙂

  33. Its really beautiful! You’ve done such a good job designing the quilt so that the main design fits well on the bed with the petals on the side. Looking forward to seeing how you quilt it!

  34. Christine says:

WOW!!!!!!! I am completely enamored with your quilt! It is so striking and bold and quite simply: beautiful Amazing work. I am excited to see it quilted when you get it done!

  35. Jean Burke says:

Wow…and wow again! It is so strikingly beautiful! Nice work….

  36. No matter what, this quilt is totally worth it! I love how extra big it is, even after washing I think it will be quite large. I am a sucker for one to sink into a lovely big blanket and LOTS of pillows. I’m really curious how you are going to quilt it and interested to see how it goes with the overall design. 🙂 I am sure it is bound to make it even better!

  37. Vera says:

Looks great and yeah what a size! Have fun with quilting!

I really appreciate the time and thought you take to comment, and I look forward to conversing with you. :)
