On Thursday I was able to sneak in an hour of work on the backing for my Three Flocks quilt top. I am taking the HSTs remaining from the flying geese block construction and putting them together as a stripe to make the center piece for the backing. I have completed sewing together 5 rows (out of 14) of these 4.5″ blocks (they will finish at 4″ square).
I had purchased a yard of the light pink, a yard of the medium pink solid, and 2 yards of the green to use to help piece the back. I had to use 15″ by WOF of the green to finish the quilt top, and another 5″ by WOF to make the solid blocks pieced in with the HST blocks shown above. Playing around in EQ5, that means right now I can make something like this:
All those white blocks in the image above means I need to purchase more fabric in order to make the backing large enough! I might just get more shades of the solid pink for a bigger color gradation. The top has a lot of green going on already. Then I will probably frame the HSTs out with a green border on top and bottom (I am using leftover strips for the sides already).
I hope that everyone has a safe and fun weekend. In the US it is Labor Day weekend, typically a longer weekend for those working. It is also the weekend I tend to celebrate my birthday with my husband (although this year my birthday is NEXT Friday). So we’re heading up into the Sierra Mountains for some hiking / backpacking / camping for a few days. This will be waiting for me when I return on Monday, and I should be able to get the HST piecing far enough along to be ready for a few more yards from my LQS on Tuesday. Nothing like a plan, right?!?!?
