As I have discussed previously, I entered two quilts into a local fair. The fair ended on Sunday evening; apparently the demolition derby Sunday night was a lot of fun. I went and picked up my quilts on Monday afternoon, and I was surprised by several things:
- I received actual ribbons! I thought I might just get the ribbon stickers. 🙂
- I won a small cash prize for each quilt that placed!
- Each quilt came back with the judge’s scorecard and comments.
I have to admit that the piecing was not difficult for Namibia Trees. The comments from the judges were very nice: “Love it! Good use of color. Color combinations are astounding. Very nicely done.”
Again, I cannot really disagree too much with the scorecard or judges comments on the Shooting Star Mini Quilt. I think the workmanship they took some points from is also discussed in their comments: “Very nice visual. Dark colored thread shows through in some places.” What they are referring to is the fact that I chose to quilt the star at the top of the flying geese by stitching in the ditch, and occasionally you can really see the quilting against the bright white or yellow fabric.
I had no idea that each division had small cash awards for first, second, and third place! I celebrated my earnings by going out to dinner and having a cheese quesadilla with extra guacamole.
Overall, I found entering the local fair to be a very nice experience, and I plan to make and enter new quilts next year!

I love entering fairs, and will enter 12 quilts and quilted projects this year. Congratulations on your winning quilts!
Congratulations – lovely to have that kind of feedback and the cheque too!
Those are great comments and feedback! I kind of like my silly little ribbons 🙂 The fair here gives out $10 gift certificates to the Quilt Works and a year’s membership to NMQA for first place winners. Basically I’m hoping to win next year’s membership so I don’t have to decide if it’s worth continuing to go.
Those are great comments and fabulous scores. You deserved that extra guacamole!
Alfalfa festival? Your town has a festival to celebrate humble alfalfa?!
Very fun. Congratulations!
so fun, glad you won enough for dinner!!!
So exciting for you. What a fun surprise to receive a little cash, too.
I’m so thrilled for you! I’m not much of a guacamole girl but I would’ve splurged on some extra sour cream! 🙂
This is awesome! WTG! Congratulations! Keep on submitting them!
Congrats, how exciting for you! 🙂
Oh fun, congrats!
Congratulations!! I *just* yesterday dropped off two small quilted wall hangings (the only two recently completed quilts still in my possession) at my local fair! It’s my first time entering anything in a fair, and my first public showing of my quilts! I didn’t realize they fill out actual score cards! What fun 🙂 Congratulations on your winnings. Now I’m extra excited to see how my quilts do!
This is awesome! Congratulations on your quilts! I’m glad you went and celebrated.
Yay! Congrats on your new ribbons 🙂 and nothing like a little side cash. More fabric!!!!
Jetgirl I hope that I do as well as you. Our fair is going on as I write. Will pick up my 3 entries on Monday.
How totally cool, Yvonne! You definitely deserve the extra guacamole 😀 Thanks for sharing the judging sheets, I’ve never seen one and found it very interesting. Congrats! And I am with Carla – Alfalfa Festival? How fun!!
