Ginkgo Leaf Pillowcases

I would like to wish my mother-in-law a very happy birthday! A few months ago she asked if I could make her a set of pillow cases to match the “Fall is Coming” quilt I had made and gifted to my in-laws a few years ago. I just love how the quilt looks on their bed:

I had wanted to make a special quilt for my in-laws for a while. My father in law is a wonderful artist (check out his art on his Frank Fuchs Art website!), and I was a bit nervous about picking out the fabrics for them. They talked it over and decided on a green/orange color theme inspired by fall color, so my mother-in-law and I went fabric shopping together. She fell in love with a set of ginkgo leaf fabrics and those two fabrics inspired the fabric pull for the rest of the quilt top.

I dug around in my stash, and lo and behold I had a little under a yard of each of the green and orange ginkgo leaf fabrics remaining. I remember that I had to purchase more of the prints in order to make the binding for the quilt. I was super lucky to have so much remaining!

Well, knowing that she had a birthday coming up, I knew I wanted to make these in time to gift them to her for her birthday. So late last week, I pulled out the fabric and found a pillowcase tutorial from Film In The Fridge. Because I did not have a full yard of fabric, I had to adjust the directions a bit. I still used a 9″ by WOF strip for the cuff and a 1.5″ by WOF strip for the trim. I had the least of the orange ginkgo leaf print, which then set a 22.5″ by WOF strip for the main body of the pillow. I follow the directions to sew together the pillowcase, but before I closed out the tube, I trimmed down from the full WOF. With the pillowcase folded wrong sides together, I cut down to 20.25″ and the pillowcases finished out at 19.5″ wide by 25.5″ long.

The pillowcases were very quick and easy to construct using the tutorial, and I love how crisp and professional they look with the splash of contrasting trip at the cuff.

Ooooh that quilt is lovely! I bet she will be thrilled to have those matching pillow cases! I love that fabric so much I bought it in the purple colorway and used it as lining in my current purse, while hoarding away the rest yardage I had left. I have yet to make a quilt of any size for my inlaws, despite quite a few hints from one of them. It’s on the to do list…somewhere.

  2. Oh so pretty. Very calm and soothing, really! I think fall colors have so much to offer! And I am a “yellow” girl at heart!!!

  3. Perfect! Those are going to look great with the quilt.

  5. They are beautiful! That strip of contrasting colour really sets them off.

I’ve been wanting to make pillow cases. Eventually I’ll finish my quilt for my bed so I would like to make matching cases for them (I should do that quilt soon so fabric is still available for the pillow cases lol). It’s my mother in law’s birthday this weekend; now you have me thinking of making a pillow case to match the quilt I made for her…
