Modern Improv Quilt – Complete!

I am very excited to say that I have completed the modern improv quilt that I started at SewDown Portland. That means that I have finally finished up all of the projects that I brought home from Portland – and that feels very good to be able to say!

The quilt finished out to be 33″ wide by 40″ long. It used an amazing amount of material to create the improv blocks; I am still a big amazed by how much waste there was… but it made a very unique quilt and it really was quite freeing for me to experiment with a technique so vastly different from my normal methods!

For the quilting, I used a black thread which mostly disappeared into the fabrics but really stood out against some of the lighter gray fabrics. I quilted a very dense (and small!) all over swirl pattern which echoed the swirls in many of the fabrics found in the front of the quilt and in the binding.

It is always satisfying to finish a project, and I am glad that I stepped outside my comfort zone to create this quilt.

  1. Your improve blocks look great! Improve is also not in my comfort zone. I’m hoping to step out more and learn to embrace it. I’m so jealous you got to attend Sew Down Portland. I had to choose between a new sewing machine and Sew Down Nashville…I got a sewing machine.

Wow! I find improv really hard to do, so I love seeing what others do with it! I love the splashes of colour you added amongst the blacks and greys.

Such a fun finish. I love the colors and your quilting design. I quilted a quilt for my niece in March that used that same polkadot backing. I love that fabric.
