A few months ago I had the pleasure of going to TN to visit with my family and meet my niece, Lillie, for the first time. Yes, I absolutely am smitten by her but I will do my best to spare you all my squee and delight over her cuteness. 🙂 While I was there, my mother (who is also a quilter) and I took some time to stop by a quilt store. I told myself I would not buy anything… but how often has that really worked out?!?!? I was doing well and about to head out of the shop when I saw one final display of shot cottons. What can I say. I needed them!
Shot Cottons
The entire time I was watching them getting cut, I was wondering to myself if they would match the colors of a photograph of a ship hull I had recently seen on Pinterest. Today, I went looking for that photo and was delighted to find Frank Hallam Day’s broader ship hull gallery. The colors of his photography are stunning and I think quite inspiring.
In the end, I don’t have much yardage, but I think that a subtle banded top using these fabrics will be lovely.

I just purchased some shot cottons today (though I have to wait for them to be delivered). I’ve never used them before but they look so nice in pictures so I can’t wait to use them in a project!
I have found them to be a bit more delicate than a regular cotton fabric, but I love the extra depth they give a quilt top!
I LOVE shot cottons! Even just a little adds so much dimension to projects. Can’t wait to see what you use them for.
I just bought my first shot cottons, too! They make my heart sing (is that silly?). I do thing the lend themselves to nautical themed creations–I plan to use some in a paper pieced buoy I just designed. Really, though, what couldn’t be made out of shot cottons!?
