Under the Sea – A Collaborative Quilt

I was able to attend QuiltCon 2013 with my mother. While there, I found some fabrics that I could not resist purchasing which turned into a baby quilt for my lovely niece, Lillie. My mother fell in love with Tula Pink’s Salt Water fabric line and purchased several of those fabrics.

Well, she just found a perfect use for them. My cousin Matt and his lovely wife Katie are expecting a baby boy in July. My mom and I occasionally collaborate on quilts together for family, and we had previously quilted a top for Matt’s sister’s first child. When my mom contacted Matt about what he and Katie were envisioning for the baby, the Tula Pink Salt Water fabrics were the obvious choice to make the quilt top. My wonderful mother made this wonky log cabin quilt top in record time (she had to get trigger finger surgery, so she was on a deadline!) and she shipped me the top and some fabric scraps so that I could make a backing, quilt, and bind it.

I was really excited by my mother’s quilt top when I received it. I created a pretty simple backing with the remaining fabric and before I knew it, I was quilting away!

Tula Pink’s fabrics have wonderful detail, and I just love this close up of one of the fussy cut center pieces for the wonky log cabin!

For the quilting, I really wanted to use the swirl / spiral quilt pattern to go with the underwater / sea theme, but there is just something about a baby quilt and hearts that I can’t shake… so I combined them into one pattern. As I told Matt and Katie, I want their little boy to know just how much his family already loves him.

Because of the collaborative effort, this quilt did not take me much time at all! It was a pleasure to be able to collaborate with my mother on this gift. After its first wash the quilt measured 34″ by 45″.

What a lovely write up! In the words of an old friend, “We did good!”

That’s such a cute baby boy quilt! Love the fabrics–I made two Salt Water quilts last year, a pink one for Aurelia and a blue one for my brother, which included a little Salt Air fabric too.

    1. I just went and found the quilts you mentioned – they are lovely!

Learned this weekend the baby will be named Frederick William. And like all babies in our family, he is already well loved.
